Welcome, I am a freelance photographer living in North East England and I am passionate about photography in its many forms. I have a huge amount of experience having worked for local and national newspapers, freelance agencies, Newcastle United FC and Sunderland AFC.
I started my career with the Gateshead Post as a darkroom printer before finishing my indentures and qualifying as a senior photographer, here I worked with Eddie Rutherford who was both picture editor and editor of the GP, Eddie's guidance about life and how to deal with different situations that can arise was invaluable.
From there I moved to The Stewart Bonney News Agency where I worked for the national press covering events such as the Meadow Well Riots and the Lockerbie disaster during this time I also served The Agency sister company Powdene Publicity shooting for commercial customers, building up a knowledge of how to make images work in terms of carrying the message for those customers. My boss here was Doug Hall who influenced me in terms of lighting and the way to see it and use it to get the most out of a brief.
I moved from Bonney's to the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal where I married my images to the various news stories carried by both newspapers on a daily basis. I reached the position of chief photographer in a staff of sixteen photographers and regularly attended editorial conference when deputising to the picture editor.
Moving on once again I joined Newcastle United FC as the official club photographer where I spent 19 years photographing everything that went on at the club, following the team and recording and syndicating what happened as they travelled around Europe and the World.
I am now (Oct 2013) embarking on the next chapter of my career and I hope that this brief history will give clients an understanding of the unique skills I can present to help promote your business and enhance your PR, I have photographed everything from cup finals to royal visits, I enjoy creating landscape images and shooting sport but put the experience I have acquired over the years into every picture I shoot, hopefully this comes across through this site, please feel free to contact me to discuss any requirements you may have.
